Gold Coast Flora and Fauna

The Gold Coast is recognised as one of the most biodiverse cities in Australia.

It is home to more than 1670 recorded species of native plants – 88 of which are listed as endangered, vulnerable or near threatened. Council has also recorded more than 600 species of native animals – 51 of which are listed as endangered, vulnerable or near threatened.

The Gold Coast Flora and Fauna website provides industry and the wider community with a valuable biodiversity resource.

A key initiative of Gold Coast City Council's Nature Conservation Strategy 2009-2019, this website incorporates:

  • a searchable database of all species known to occur on the Gold Coast
  • species studies and reports
  • Google mapping tools to locate native and introduced species, and study locations
  • detailed species information including biology, legal status and images

Gold Coast Flora & Fauna assists Council staff, developers, landholders and conservation groups to identify and locate plants and animals within the region.

It has been developed by Council's Environmental Planning and Conservation Team to increase awareness of local biodiversity - while assisting residents, businesses, schools, research organisations and community groups to contribute directly to native species conservation.

This website is part of Council's ongoing commitment to conserve our city's biodiversity and natural assets. By providing accurate data about our native flora and fauna, we can help inform decision-making and ensure future development is ecologically sustainable.
